GA DOT-FUNDED RAIL STATION RESTORATION HONORED
ATLANTA - A Georgia Department of Transportation-funded project to restore
Clarke County's Winterville Rail Depot has been honored for Excellence in
Rehabilitation
by the Georgia Trust for Historic Preservation.
The nearly 100-year-old rail station had fallen into disrepair after closing
to passenger
service in the mid-1960s and was in danger of being demolished as a safety
hazard.
However, a $225,000 transportation enhancement grant from Georgia DOT in
2002 allowed
the Town of Winterville to both repair the depot and restore it to its early
20th-Century
charm.
"We're pleased to have been able to assist Winterville in preserving this
portion of the
community's heritage and delighted that those efforts have been recognized
by The Georgia
Trust," Georgia DOT Commissioner Harold Linnenkohl observed. Transportation
enhancement grants are made periodically by the Department from
specifically-earmarked
federal funds set aside for purposes such as historic preservation,
environmental protection,
landscaping, scenic sites, and pedestrian and bicycle programs.
