Town of Quantico celebrates train station dedication

MARINE CORPS BASE QUANTICO=2C Va(May 5=2C 2005) -- The Virginia Railway E=
xpress hosted a ceremony April 27 to commemorate the Quantico train stati=
on=92s reopening=2C after a million-dollar renovation=2E The reopening wi=
ll take place May 16=2E

Maureen Caddigan=2C Prince William County Board of Supervisors=2C Dumfrie=
s District=3B Mark Roeber=2C manager=2C government relations=2C Virginia =
Railway Express=3B and Town of Quantico Mayor Mitchel Raftelis=2C gave re=
marks at the ceremony=2E

=93This is a great day for the Town of Quantico and for Marine Corps Base=
 Quantico=2C=94 said Raftelis=2E =93I am overwhelmed by this railroad sta=
tion=2E This is a great asset and showplace for our community and the Qua=
ntico Marine Corps Base=2E Over 500 daily commuters and visitors get on a=
nd off at this station and this is wonderful that we have this historic s=
tation here for them to utilize=2E=94

The VRE hoped the station=27s reopening would coincide with last week=92s=
 planned community celebration=2E However=2C the custom-made train statio=
n doors weren=92t installed in time for the ceremony=2E VRE officials did=
n=92t want to leave the newly refurbished station unsecured=2C Mark Roebe=
r=2C VRE spokesman=2E

In 1953=2C the architectural design of the station was selected to confor=
m with the design of the barracks and buildings aboard MCB Quantico=2E =


=22We wanted to retain the same building because of the history behind it=
=2C=22 said Raftelis=2E =22It=27s because of the Marine Corps Base that n=
ot only this station is here=2C but the Town of Quantico=2E=22

The historic station was closed from 1971 until the recent ceremony becau=
se of a decline in patronage=2E Trains still stopped and passengers still=
 rode=2C but the closing of the station building itself caused commuters =
to wait outside for trains=2E =


=22Prince William County is becoming a premier community with all the new=
 jobs=2C economy at its best=2C new industries moving in and Marine Corps=
 Systems Command=27s 900 to 1=2C500 personnel=2E This station will defini=
tely be an asset to this great community=2C=22 said Raftelis=2E

In addition to the station reopening=2C the Prince William Model Railroad=
 Club will establish its headquarters in about one-fourth of the building=
=2E While it set up a model demonstration for the ceremony=2C a permanent=
 train display is being constructed=2C said Roeber=2E

Roeber said VRE has solicited bids from vendors to operate a store=2C as =
well as an indoor ticket vendor=2E The store will sell snacks and souveni=
rs=2E While a vendor may not be in place until later=2C the station is st=
ill scheduled to open May 16=2E
