Preservationists fight proposal to move former station

NORTH HOLLYWOOD, Calif. - Residents and historians who hope to preserve the
old Lankershim, Calif., railroad station in the San Fernando Valley, pledged
Thursday to fight any efforts to relocate the building to make way for
development, according to a story in the Los Angeles Daily News and other news
sources. The “Save the Lankershim Train Depot Committee” has started a
petition drive to keep the depot in its current location, said President Guy
Weddington McCreary. North Hollywood was named Lankershim until changing its
name in 1927.

The wooden, two-story station at one time served Southern Pacific’s Burbank
Branch and Pacific Electric’s San Fernando Valley line, both now abandoned,
and sits on land owned by the Metropolitan Transportation Authority at the
corner of Lankershim and Chandler boulevards, across from the Metro Red Line
subway station and next to the termination point of the Orange Line. MTA
officials said they have received a development proposal that calls for moving
the depot west of Tujunga Avenue.
