Group looks to preserve historic Morton station
By BARBARA ORMSBY , Times Correspondent
MORTON - Worried about the possible demolition of a local landmark, a group calling itself the Morton Station Restoration Committee will gather for an organizational meeting, inviting anyone interested in saving the structure.
The committee will meet Thursday, Jan. 27, at 7:30 p.m. in the Meeting Room of Morton Borough Hall, Highland Avenue and Alfa Terrace.
The restoration committee is being formed to address the possible demolition of Morton's historic 1891 outbound passenger shelter due to structural deficiencies. The shelter is located on the westbound side of the SEPTA railroad tracks west of Kedron Avenue (Route 420).
A long-term goal of the organization will be to partner with SEPTA to assist with the upkeep of the entire historic Morton train station complex, including the 1879 passenger station, the 1880 freight station and the aforementioned 1891 outbound passenger shelter.
The three structures form one of the few completely intact suburban railroad complexes in the Philadelphia region, according to authorities.
The currently threatened passenger shelter is of an ornate Victorian design, which was once common on Pennsylvania Railroad commuter lines but which has become increasingly rare.
The goal of the organizational meeting will be to bring together interested members of the community to discuss the mission and format of the group. The intent will be to lay the groundwork for a formal organization, which will partner with SEPTA and the borough to assure the preservation of the station complex for the benefit of the community.
Persons with questions regarding the meeting may call Mario Cimino at (610) 328-9698.
