Re: [Fwd: (rshsdepot) East Williston, NY]

No, just as I said yesterday the railroad is just as culpable in letting the building rot, in not appreciating all it stood for and
was, in (deliberately until the last week?) not telling anyone, not looking for anyone, etc...they are just as and maybe more at
fault here.....What do you expect people to go out of their way to check on all (not protected) landmarks to check on them?

Like I say, no one in the Five Towns knows the status of the Hewlett depot now, I guess if we see it start to deteriorate or someday
notice a wrecking ball there then we might, and then what? Call the unresponsive railroad or the MTA?

I gave up on the Rockville Centre Historical Society who were planning on saving that old depot and then did absolutely nothing....

I will only be repeating myself now, but the railroad owned the land and the station so they can not be excused because others
didn't know about it or if they did couldn't or didn't do anything...The MTA is solely responsible for letting it rot and for
destroying it....especially after 9/11 when communities and organizations have far less funds

: Paul:
: I read your lengthy commentary yesterday as well as Mr. Lanzo's comment, and
: while, again, they are appreciated, I must tell you that I now have to use
: our vile, hateful, lying, degenerate political opponent's (who NEVER take
: their own words to heart or actually use them!) favorite comment:
:
: "The people" NOT the RR must take responsibility for this.
:
: It was NOT the RR's fault, it was the community's fault.
:
: My dear and favorite law professor used to say:
: "a thing is not what you say it is; it is what it is," and no matter how
: much you try to tell us that black is white, it is NOT. The PEOPLE of E.
: Williston were "at fault," but y'know what? Maybe "they" didn't and don't
: care and there are no small number of communities that have the same feeling
: and attitude.
:
: In our minds it is "criminal." In their minds it is ridding themselves of
: an eyesore, and at the risk of upsetting you, there is no choice but to lay
: you out on this one: the salvation of a historic building is the
: RESPONSIBILITY of the people of that community and they didn't care.
:
: Again, end of story.
