Paradise Station Back On Track?

A few months ago, it looked as though the proposed station in Paradise at best would be delayed and at worst might not even be built do to the fact that Amtrak was making no promises. Now the latest new indicates that Amtrak is finally onboard and the station may open by January 2005 according to an article printed in the Intelligencer Journal (Lancaster) on May 26, 2004 Local section, page B-1. Article by Cindy Hummel.

The article describes the two 300-foot platforms one for westbound trains and one for eastbound trains. They will be just east of Stock Lumber Co. on Amtrak right-of-way putting them about 800 or 1000 feet East from the SRC switchback.

The article states: “Walkways would lead to the platforms. Philadelphia-bound travelers would take a path under an existing railroad underpass. Nawn said a pathway through the underpass would need the township’s approval since it is in a flood plain.” From what I can tell, this means the RR bridge that crosses Eshelman Run just 800 feet or so from the SRC switchback in Leaman Place. That area is on a floodplain. The bridge was built by the PRR in the 1890’s and is four-tracks wide. How cool it would be to have better access to this historic bridge.

The article also states that the SRC tracks would be extended to meet the new station. Now just a few articles back, it was said that a walkway would be built to connect the station with a platform that was planned to be built in Leaman Place so the SRC would not have to extend its tracks. Who knows what their doing. The story is always changing.
The article also mentioned a turntable to be built for the SRC in Paradise. Now this has been a constant in every article on the station. However it is rumored that they might build a wye instead.

The article states; “The plan, which includes extending the Strasburg Rail Road tracks to meet the station and the construction of a locomotive turntable, will go before the township zoning hearing board and then return to the supervisors for approval in July.”

The article also states: “Historic Trust of Lancaster County is currently raising money to move an old 10-by-20-foot Pennsylvania Railroad pump house to the Strasburg Rail Road property.” WOW I didn’t know there was a pump house there. That would be great to have it preserved where all can see it in Strasburg. Where exactly is the pump house? It must be near the creek somewhere hidden in the brush. But where?

Can’t wait to see what happens. Will the station construction begin by September 04? Time will tell.
