Talks with Union Pacific over depot title ending soon?

Kingsburg CA -- Kingsburg's old train depot has weathered the storm and may
finally be ready to see
light of day again, at least that is the latest word from city hall.

According to City Manager Don Pauley, patience and a good working
relationship with at least one key
employee at Union Pacific's headquarters has resulted in some headway being
made in the struggle to
secure a title to the property.

City Clerk Sue Bosch has been working with Ernestine Burtley at Union
Pacific's headquarters in
Omaha, Nebraska.

"We're finalizing the last few details of the agreement we've reached, and
believe we will be able
to executive the lease within the next 60 days, so we should have title to
the property by June 1,"
said Pauley.

Prior to these latest developments, the issue hasn't had too much attention
focused on it since last
October, when the Kingsburg City Council last received an update at its Oct.
15 meeting.

At that time, there was talk about sending a delegation to Union Pacific's
Nebraska headquarters to
demand some sort of resolution.

However, it was ultimately decided that this would not be the best approach.

The delegation question arose because no progress had been made on the
situation in some time.

Last February, The Recorder reported that progress on the $750,000
restoration project was nowhere
in sight.

Fortunately, the structure has stood up fairly well to the elements that
might otherwise have
destroyed the once vital structure.

If the city is indeed able to secure title to the property, then work could
probably start six
months to a year after the federal environmental review process is
completed.
