   <1882 Electricity arrives on Staten Island when the American Linoleum Manufacturing Co. illuminates its Travis plant. The community is called Linoleumville because American Linoleum is the first plant in the United States to manufacture the new floor-covering product made from linseed oil, cork and burlap. The hugely successful plant employs more than 200 workers, and a village springs up nearby to house their families. >
