Depot Days slated April 24-25

For the eighth year, five Green County communities will celebrate their heritage, dating back to 1858, through Depot Days of Green County Saturday and Sunday, April 24-25. 

Albany, Brodhead, Brooklyn, Monroe and New Glarus will participate in the two-day event including "speeder car" rides, historic depot museums and passenger train tours, model railroad displays and Cheese Country "Off Track Tours." 

This year's "off track tour" by bus costs $35 a person and includes a round-trip tour to all five communities, museum tours, lunch, two snacks, a speeder car ride, a Depot Days collector button and raffle ticket. The tour leaves Brodhead at 9 a.m. and returns at 5 p.m. Reservations are required by April 15 due to limited seating. 

Brooklyn is the site of the popular speeder car rides. Tickets are available at the site. The community will also offer a Rock County Pullers Garden Tractor pull in the legion park with a testing day beginning at 10 a.m. Saturday and the pull at 10 a.m. Sunday. Model railroad and artisan displays and demonstrations will return to the community center, the Lions Club pig roast is 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. both days in the park, the fire department's Explorers breakfast is Sunday at the fire station, a Silver Dollar Shows carnival is both days in Legion Park and a parade is set for 1 p.m. Sunday on Wisconsin 92 Sunday. 

Brodhead will host the return of a real passenger train for touring at the historic depot; a garden train display Saturday at 502 E. 4th Ave.; and a hobo lunch at the Bank of Brodhead. 

Albany offers a museum tour, live entertainment beginning at 8 p.m. Saturday and S&B Tubing activities. 

Monroe hosts the county's second model train show, to be held at the StateLine Ice and Community Expo and offers cream puffs and Apple Jack cheese sandwiches at the Milwaukee Road Depot/Historic Cheesemaking Center. Children can toot the horn and flash the lights on a "put-put" car, visit the depot's restored Milwaukee Road ribsider caboose and hear "Luther the Jet" spin story and song at 1 p.m. Saturday. The Toy Train Barn on Wisconsin 81 offers reduced admission all weekend. 

New Glarus offers a restored depot, historic walking tour which includes all the painted cow and entertainment by street entertainers. 

All communities will offer $3 tickets for a chance to win an Agawa Canyon Canadian train tour for two out of Sault Sainte Marie and two nights lodging. The eighth in a series Depot Days buttons is included in the ticket price.
