When the Third Avenue El receved an Express track, it was installed above
the main tracks at stations to save space. At Chatham Square -- which is
just south of here, the Second and Third Avenue lines crossed on diamonds ,
with the Third Avenue Express tracks running over. Both Second and Third
Avenue trains could head to City Hall or South Ferry on the lower level.
Upper Level trains ran to South Ferry from Third only. I believe the
diamonds may have been removed along the way, preventing lower level Third
Ave trains from any destination other than City Hall..

I suspect this view is looking east at Pell Street
