Paul Luchter and I had some discussions about historic Brooklyn Railways a
few months back, and I've come across a neat new book on the subject -- "How
we got to Coney Island" by Brian J. Cudahy, published by Fordham University
Press.
If anyone has an interest in this particular aspect on NYC-area railroading,
I'd suggest pticking this one up! It could use better maps (and could have
used a good book editor) but the basics are all there, including the
BRT/BMT's antecedent Street Railways, and nice descriptions of the
development of the various terminals on each end. He even mentions the South
Brooklyn's 8-track passenger terminal at 39th St near the waterfront that
was never used by passenger trains.
I've also been alerted that there's remaining evidence of a passenger
platform along the ex-steam, ex-trolley PRW on the Bath Beach line (later an
El on a different alignment). I'll see if I can scout it out when the
weather gets a bit warmer.
Cheers,
Jim Guthrie
