Re: (rshsdepot) Guilford, CT - Abandoned Amtrak Buildings Still In Limbo
Yes, they do. They have to attempt to run passenger service on an extremely limited
budget. They also have to pay property taxes and carry insurance on all abandoned
property (just in case some idiot gets injured while trespassing and gets a sleazy lawyer
to sue them). If you and the people in that community think it's so historic (ancient is
for Egypt, Greece, and Rome), then you and they should cough up the money to
preserve it. The property was offered to local government -- probably for nothing --
but they debated for years about funding., and did nothing.
And if you're interested in some of the "better" things they have to do with their money?
Why don't you ask Senator Ted Stevens of Alaska (one of Amtrak greatest opponents)
why Amtrak was forced to spend $25 Million ! to build a new passenger station at an
airport in Alaska to handle luxury cruise ship passengers so the tour companies don't have
to provide luxury coaches to ferry the passengers 20 miles from the docks to the airport.
Alaska Railroad (which earns a fortune from the cruise traffic) paid for the line, but Amtrak
(which has no trains in Alaska, and earns NOTHING from this traffic) had to pay for the
station !
Jim.
