As a follow up to my recent posting on the Whittier depots, photos of
PE's passenger and freight depots can be seen when you visit the
Electric Railway Historical Association of Southern California's web
site at: www.erha.org
When the page loads select the red rectangular icon near the top of the
page, this takes you to the Books & Photos section. When that page loads
you'll see the same icon front and center as the cover for the ERHA's
book PACIFIC ELECTRIC STATIONS, select it again. This loads thumbnails
of the book's contents, scrolling down you'll come to examples of
Typical Southern Division and how thoughtful they were to use both the
Whittier Passenger and Freight stations as exmples.
On the right is the passenger station at Philadelphia and Comstock which
still stands as the home to a swing style dance hall.
On the left side are three images, the upper left is mislabelled as
WHITTIER (COMSTOCK AVANUE) it is actually a Sanborn Fire Insurance map
circa 1925 which shows the SP depot at its original location at the end
of Bailey St. which isn't shown. To its right is another Sanborn map
which shows the intersection of Philadelphia and Comstock, the center
black rectangle is the PE depot. Below that is the PE freight station
that was located south of the SP depot on an extended platform. This
station was relocated from another location with Redondo Beach in my
mind as its origianl site.
Hope this sheds some more light.
