Thanks for the detailed reply. The derelict station I 
photographed in Dec. 1988 is the one that has recently been 
moved and restored (I checked the photos at 
www.whittiermuseum.org).  I had noted it as the "PE depot," 
although it's clearly a standard SP combination station. I 
perhaps got this from looking at a map or reading something 
dated after the SP abandoned its original tracks and used former 
PE tracks, as you note above.
