(rshsdepot) Re: Whittier Depot
In reference to the recent posting on the Whittier Depot I would like to
add to the story.
The article stated: "
The depot building, . . . . , is the last of its architectural style,
according to literature from the city of Whittier.
That "literature" was written by myself almost ten years ago before the Depot's design was identified (I think that I must purge all City records of this "literature" before much longer). To be specific it is a Southern Pacific Std. Plan No. 18, and while it is the only one of the 3 or 4 built here in Southern California still standing, there are ten more No. 18'still standing in Northern California, but not including the new Mountain View depot.
It was ejected from its original location by a developer's retail center some 8 blocks to City owned lots pegged for redevelopment. While undergoing renovation many objected to the expenditure of City money on this "old building", but today, 6 months after its re-dedication, more and more local groups have taken to its charm and are holding their monthly meetings in the former freight room, thereby making it an integral part of the community as we all hoped it would become.
I expect it won't be too much longer until visitors look around and ask, "When did they take the tracks out?"
