Galion has big plans for renovating historic Big Four depot

GALION -- Passenger trains don't stop at the Big Four Depot anymore, but
civic leaders still hope to turn the building into a hub of activity=2E=20=


A $50,000 gift from the state next year will bring that dream a little
closer to reality=2E The money was earmarked for renovations to the histor=
ic
building and was included in the state's 2003 annual construction budget=2E=
=20

"We can start on some of the improvements we need," said Linda Chambers,
head of Main Street Galion, which helped in the submission of paperwork fo=
r
the grant=2E "There are a lot of things to do in that building -- heating,=

cooling, plumbing=2E This will give us a good start=2E"=20

In recent weeks, the depot received a fresh coat of exterior paint=2E The
city also learned the depot has been awarded an historical marker by the
Ohio Bicentennial Commission=2E The marker is part of the five-year
Longaberger Legacy Initiative, which awarded 293 markers across the state,=

with at least one in each county=2E=20

When set in place, the plaque, made of brown cast metal, will measure
46-by-42 inches and will feature raised gold lettering=2E=20

"These permanent memorials help Ohioans learn more about our state and
serve as a way to bring communities together to commemorate and celebrate
what is important to them," said Stephen C=2E George, executive director o=
f
the Ohio Bicentennial Commission=2E=20

Galion purchased the former New York Central Depot in 2000 with plans to
preserve its historic integrity=2E A final use for the building, known aro=
und
town as the Big Four Depot, has yet to be determined=2E=20

It opened in 1900 as the division office for the New York Central Railroad=
=2E
Galion had been a key stop on the Cleveland, Columbus, Cincinnati and St=2E=

Louis Railroad, which later became part of New York Central=2E=20
