Sayre Historical Society begins fund-raising efforts
By GREG DIUTE--Evening Times Reporter

SAYRE -- On Friday, the Sayre Historical Society announced it will host a
wine and cheese fund raising event on Dec=2E 17 from 5:30 to 8 p=2Em=2E at=
 the
Train Station=2E Money raised at the event will go toward restoring the
society's restoration of the station now that they hold the lease=2E

"We're going to create a Victorian atmosphere in the Train Station like it=

was at the height of its day," said society member Henry Farley=2E "We wan=
t
everything to be as authentic as possible=2E We're inviting people to come=

see the Train Station as it is now before all the changes happen=2E"

Now that the society owns the 99 year lease on the station, society member=
s
will be busy raising funds to support the work they want to do in the
building=2E

As the first of three major fund-raisers this year, Farley said the societ=
y
will be pulling out all the stops to make this a moment for the community
to remember=2E Aside from the wine and cheese tasting, there will be
luminaries lining the outside of the building, Christmas gift baskets,
raffle drawings, homemade candy bars with the train station printed on the=

wrapper, as well as a special appearance by a former conductor of the
Lehigh Valley Railroad=2E

"Lloyd Riffenberg, who's now 91-years-old will be dressed up in his
original conductors uniform to lend authenticity to the event," said
society member John Burkhart, who was also at the fund-raising committee
meeting=2E "We're going to get his old uniform from the county museum out =
of
storage for him to wear at the fundraiser=2E It's the actual uniform he wo=
rn
during his days on the railroad=2E"

One of the main attractions said the events organizers, will be original
photographs of Susquehanna river-towns from the late 19th century=2E Many =
of
the photos were taken of local scenes from that period of history=2E

The event is open to the public, for a fee and tickets can be purchased in=

advanced from the society or at the door on the night of the event=2E
