Canteen preservation hopes back on track

Plans to renovate and preserve a railroad depot that once served as a
canteen for millions of soldiers during World War II received a boost
recently after railroad officials contacted the city about the proposal=2E=
=20

City manager Paul Nicholson notified the Streator City Council about the
new development Tuesday=2E=20

In the past, due at least in part to changes of ownership, railroad
officials were unresponsive to the city=92s efforts to discuss the project=
=2E=20

However, the situation changed recently when representatives of the
Burlington Northern Santa Fe railroad contacted the city about the
possibility=2E=20

Nicholson noted that the railroad presented the proposal as a concept for
discussion=2E The concept involves a possible lease of land located along =
the
west side of the tracks from Main Street north as far as the Broadway
viaduct=2E=20

While there is no commitment to proceed, the city manager said =93it may b=
e
possible to ultimately preserve the depot for historic or other public or
private purposes=2E=94=20
