(Summary from the July 14, 2002 Cresent-News)

The eight-five year old Defiance, OH depot has seen many great=20
years until now=2E With the last passenger train that stopped at=20
Defiance in April 30, 1971, the depot served as a maintenance/
storage facility for CSX and its predecessor (Chessie System)=20
to the present=2E Currently, the depot is in disrepair due to a=20
lack of maintenance and vandalism=2E

The Historic Homes of Defiance has shown interest in acquiring=20
the Defiance depot from CSX for restoration=2E Unfortunately, CSX=20
has not been cooperative in the attempt to aquire the depot=2E=20
Kendal Carpenter, from CSX Real Property, has repeatedly denied=20
or refused calls from Historic Homes of Defiance=2E This made the=20
group turn to the City of Defiance for help=2E

The City of Defiance has contacted Mr=2E Carpenter about the depot=2E=20
At the present time, the City of Defiance wants to work with=20
CSX on preserving the depot, but may use code violations as=20
leverage for action=2E This may present CSX with three options:=20
bring the building up to code, tear it down, or convey it to=20
the city or a third party=2E
