Las Vegas Railroad Depot Renovation Project to Benefit from Federal Funds
WASHINGTON - U.S. Senator Jeff Bingaman reported today that the community
of Las Vegas will benefit from a $230,955 federal grant to help with a
renovation project underway at the city's railroad depot that will help
expand public transportation services.
"Public transportation is a key element in providing a better quality of
life for a community's residents. It provides a convenient means to help
people access jobs and also reduces pollutants from automobiles," Bingaman
said. "I'm pleased the federal government is supporting the city of Las
Vegas in its effort increase access to its public transportation system."
Purchased with the help of federal funding provided in 1995, the community
is working to renovate the railroad depot to serve as a hub for other public
transportation services such as the city's bus system. The funds provided
today will be used to make structural modifications, and to install a
sprinkler system, stairway, metal canopy and new wood flooring. Improvements
to increase accessibility for people with disabilities will also be made.
The funds were provided through a $2.75 million earmark requested by
Bingaman in the fiscal year 2000 Transportation Appropriations Bill for the
state of New Mexico to distribute to bus facilities across the state.
