Call for Artifacts: Hudson & Manhattan "Tubes" Exhibit
The Hoboken (NJ) Historical Museum and the Jersey City Landmarks=20
Conservancy are seeking individuals, institutions, libraries=20
or museums who possess rare and unique historical collections=20
related to the Hudson & Manhattan Railroad for their upcoming=20
show, "The Tubes: Hudson & Manhattan's Rails Under the Hudson,=20
1874 to the Present-day PATH"=20

From January 19, 2003 through April 13, 2003, the Hoboken=20
Historical Museum and the Jersey City Landmarks Conservancy=20
will present "The Tubes: Hudson & Manhattan's Rails Under the=20
Hudson, 1874 to the Present-day PATH," an exhibition at the Hoboken
Historical Museum on the development of the Hudson Tunnels, from=20
1874 until their completion over 30 years later, and their=20
inclusion into the PATH rapid transit system=2E=20

Along with text, photographs, diagrams, enlarged images from postcards,=20=

and artifacts from the collection of the Hoboken Historical Museum,=20
"The Tubes" will feature rare artifacts borrowed from private=20
collectors, early footage of the tunnels transferred to video=20
and viewable on a Museum monitor, and a model of an H&M train=20
that will move through the Museum space on a miniature track=20
installed along its mezzanine=2E An eight-page, four-color brochure=20
will accompany the exhibit=2E=20

The exhibit will be presented in wall panels and glass showcases in=20
the Hoboken Historical Museum's fully-accessible, ground-floor level,=20
1,500-square-foot exhibition space in its permanent home in a portion=20
of the former Bethlehem Steel Shipyard Machine Shop, 1301 Hudson=20
Street, Hoboken=2E=20

Sections include:=20

"Sandhogs & The Engineering Marvel," featuring numerous diagrams,
photographs, and accompanying text on the subaqueous tunnel's 1874
conception by Colonel Dewitt Clinton Haskin, and its construction=20
and completion in 1908 by resourceful engineers and an army of=20
"sandhogs" under the leadership of William Gibbs McAdoo;=20

"The Public Be Pleased," featuring old advertisements,=20
photographs, and other paper ephemera on the ways in which=20
Hudson & Manhattan's innovative philosophy was made manifest=20
in the company's cars, stations, and the treatment of riders=20
and employees, especially women; and=20

"John Oakman, An Architect and His Legacy," featuring vintage=20
and contemporary photographs of Oakman-designed structures,=20
including the majestic brick Powerhouse in Jersey City and=20
the Christopher Street PATH station in New York City, and=20
efforts to preserve them=2E=20

Two scholarly, illustrated lectures will be provided to=20
complement the exhibit=2E On Sunday, January 26, 2003, at=20
3 p=2Em=2E, transportation historian, Brian J=2E Cudahy, author=20
of "Rails Under the Mighty Hudson: the Story of the Hudson=20
Tubes, the Pennsy Tunnels, and Manhattan Transfer"=20
(Brattleboro, VT: Stephen Greene Press, 1975; reissued Bronx,=20
NY: Fordham University Press, 2002) will provide an illustrated=20
lecture on the building of the Hudson and Manhattan tunnels=2E Mr=2E=20
Cudahy, who also authored "Cash, Tokens, and Transfers: A History=20
of Urban Mass Transit in North America" (Fordham, 1990) will=20
discuss the engineering advances that made the "tubes" and rapid=20
transit possible, as well as the ways the tunnels have changed=20
the lives of New Yorkers and New Jerseyeans by physically linking=20
them as never before=2E A book signing will follow audience discussion=2E=20=


And on Sunday, March 9, 2003 at 3 p=2Em=2E, John Gomez, president of=20
the preservation non-profit Jersey City Landmarks Conservancy, will=20
provide a slide lecture on the history of Jersey City's 1906 Hudson &
Manhattan Railroad Powerhouse, which once literally gave life to the=20
Hudson Tunnels, and current efforts not only to preserve this rare
architectural reminder of America's Gilded and Industrial Ages, but=20
to make it the innovative centerpiece of the cultural and commercial=20
revival of Jersey City's waterfront=2E=20
