Hi Mark,
Thanks for doing the Wisconsin depot list! I appreciate the time & effort
you put into this, as well as the contributions from Bob, Dave and Cliff. I
would like to update this list with some corrections and additions, listed
by county:
BAYFIELD COUNTY: The ex-NP line at Iron River was abandoned by the BN in the
late 1980's.
BROWN COUNTY: The IC never served Brown County. Bellevue was located along
the C&NW Shore Line, which had no tunnels.
COLUMBIA COUNTY: Several additions here: In Portage, the former CMStP&P
depot was razed in 1995, but the CP has a new yard office building here, as
well as a brick passenger shelter for Amtrak. There is also an old freight
depot still standing on the south side of the yard, in private use. Also in
Portage, the old MStP&SSM / WC depot still stands, along a short stretch of
track kept by CMStP&P after the branch from Stevens Point was abandoned in
1945. Over in nearby Pardeeville, the CMStP&P depot was moved out of town in
1970 and converted into a house.
CRAWFORD COUNTY: The CB&Q depot in Prairie Du Chien is currently used by
BNSF, not W.W.
DANE COUNTY: The upper half of the old IC depot in Basco exists as a house
in that town; Evansville is in Rock County; The IC freight station in
Madison has been used by U-Haul for many years; The Mt.Horeb depot was
destroyed by the local fire department in 1981.
DODGE COUNTY: Add the former C&NW depot in South Beaver Dam, a wood
combination depot built in 1911, and still used by UP.
FOND DU LAC COUNTY: Both the C&NW and CMStP&P depots in Ripon are gone.
GREEN COUNTY: The IC line is abandoned through Belleville and Monroe.
IOWA COUNTY: The Arena depot was moved from the track about 1955 to a
location just outside the town along Highway 14, and converted into a bar;
The Barneveld depot was gone before 1973, and would not have survived the
massive tornado here in 1984, which destroyed all buildings along the former
C&NW right-of-way (and most of the town); Add the old C&NW depot in
Dodgeville, it is located a couple miles north of town at the "Don-Q-Inn"
resort.
JEFFERSON COUNTY: At Johnson Creek, the track is active, but the C&NW depot
is now gone; The CMStP&P depot in Watertown was razed in 1994.
MARATHON COUNTY: Both the C&NW and (original) CMStP&P depots still stand in
Wausau, both in private use.
MARQUETTE COUNTY: The depot at Oxford is C&NW, not CStPM&O, still used by UP
as of May,2001.
ONEIDA COUNTY: Both the C&NW depot and track are gone at Woodruff.
RICHLAND COUNTY: "Gothan" is spelled Gotham, the depot here was closed in
the late 1940's, but is nicely restored today, located a short distance away
from where the track used to be; The Richland Center depot has also been
restored, still at its original site; the Lone Rock depot was gone by April,
1973.
ROCK COUNTY: At Clinton, the depot and tower were both demolished a few
years ago; the interurban substation south of Janesville was the RB&J, not
the AB&J.
SAUK COUNTY:The MStP&SSM tower at North Freedom was formerly located at a
highway crossing north of Soo Line's yard at Neenah,WI; Rock Springs now has
a "depot" again, as the C&NW built a small new depot/office (complete with
station signs on it) in 1991, I'm not sure if it is currently in use; The
depot at Spring Green was demolished sometime between 1970 and early 1973.
WALWORTH COUNTY: The Darien depot is still at its original site, in private
use and modified; At East Troy, the TMER&L interurban depot still stands (in
addition to the substation) and is used as a house; The depots at Elkhorn
and Lake Geneva have been gone for many years; The Lyons depot was moved to
Springfield, where it is close to the Springfield depot; the Springfield
depot itself was moved a short distance away from the track in 1960.
WAUKESHA COUNTY: The tower at Duplainville was closed in 1991 and razed the
same year; and unless it was torn down in recent years, there is still a
TMER&L interurban depot at Oconomowoc, made into a house.
In addition, there are several depots on the list that I've heard have been
torn down, but having not been to those locations recently, I can't confirm
any of them.
Thank you again for doing this list; I look forward to any future
corrections and additions from other contributors.
