I just found my first interior view of this completely unique station.
Was built by the Van Swearingen's and was going to be the Pitts station
for their cross country railroad that MIGHT have come to fruition had
the depression not stepped in. It was going to allow them (the Vans) to
be in a position to compete with the NYC and PRR, for as you know, they
already controlled the NKP and C & O plus were planning more of the SHRT
type private median rapid transit for Pittsburgh. The company that was
incorportated to operate the Pitts area facilities was the
Wabash-Pittsburgh Terminal Co. and somehow the P & WV was involved
there, but I don't remember the details and my book on the Vans is
tucked away. It is a fascinating story, with the huge station that may
have served just a couple of trains a day. If any of you are from
Pitts, perhaps you will fill us in. Is the station still extant?
