An interesting irony is that Robert Moses never learned how to drive!

Read the spectacular biography of him by Robert Caro (more recently 
focusing on multi-volume bio of LBJ).  "The Power Broker"  It's 
daunting at 1200 pages of fine print, but holds your interest 
throughout.
