Subject: McCain Amendments; Washington Post article
To NARP Members--June 6, 2002:
(1) Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) has submitted two anti-Amtrak amendments to
H.R. 4775, the Supplemental Appropriations Act. Amendment #3646 would
delete Amtrak's $55 million from the bill. Amendment #3652 would give
the Secretary of Transportation the power to determine whether overhauls
and wreck repairs qualify as "emergencies." Votes could come today or
tomorrow; the Senate leadership hopes to finish the bill before
adjournment tomorrow. Phone calls and e-mails are appropriate (along
with requests or thank-yous regarding senators signing the pro-Amtrak
letter to Senate appropriations leaders--my May 31 e-mail).
(2) "Amtrak Faces Shutdown in July, Says New Chief" is the headline on a
story in today's Washington Post. The story is based on an interview
with Amtrak President and CEO David L. Gunn and notes his plans to
eliminate the strategic business units. Go to
