Sale all but final
D&H OK's sale of Rouses Point station to village

By SUZANNE MOORE Staff Writer

ROUSES POINT - The State Department of Transportation has signed off on the
D&H Railroad Station property in Rouses Point, a last hurdle to village
acquisition for a museum.

"Now, it's just a matter of paperwork," said Mayor George Rivers. "It's just
a matter of time."

The Rouses Point-Champlain Historical Society would next take charge of the
turreted, brick building on Pratt Street; it began fund-raising last year
for its renovation.

Efforts to gain ownership of the long-empty building date back to 1992, when
then-Town of Champlain Historian Melissa McManus made the attempt, also with
an eye toward creating a local museum.

The D&H declined to make the station available, then later put a price tag
of $18,000 on it.

Last May, after a long effort by Rivers, the company sent the village an
agreement of sale for the depot and its two-acre lot. The cost now was $10.

Though the village quickly sent payment, DOT still had to have its say. That
entity has preferential right of acquisition when the railroad decides to
let a property go.

"But now they've released it to the Village of Rouses Point," said an elated
Rivers.

Since becoming a wholly owned subsidiary of Canadian Pacific Railroad
several years ago, D&H has OK'd one similar deal: in 1993, North Creek
Railroad Station was turned over to North Country Rail Depot Preservation
Association for $1. That building is now a regional museum.

Rivers said the village will board up the broken windows and better seal off
the building as soon as the transfer of ownership happens. Officials have
expressed concern that youngsters could be injured if they entered the
unsecured structure.

But first, the final contract must be executed.

"I'll be glad when I sign the paper," Rivers said.
