From the RIPTA website:

"On June 26, 1999, a piece of transit history was reintroduced to Rhode
Island. The Providence LINK, on this day, made its debut as RIPTA's
contribution to the restoration of historic downtown Providence bringing
back the vintage style, trackless trolley. These trolleys, moreover, serve
as the first fleet fueled by Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) in Rhode Island's
mass transit history."
