    Shortly after World War II, after a disastrous fire took out the old
one -- one of my early memories, age 3 or 4 about 1946 or -7, was riding the
SI Ferry with my father and asking him about the intense smell of burned
wood in the air at the SI end, and his telling me there had just been a
tremendous fire.
    Judging by the disaster they inflicted at the Manhattan end, the same
thing would have happened at S.I. without the "benefit" of the fire.
