Jackson City Council authorizes money for transportation center

JACKSON (AP) -- The Jackson City Council has authorized an additional $3
million for renovations at the city's Union Station Depot.

Greyhound Bus Lines plans to vacate its Jefferson Street site by 2003 and
relocate to the depot. Council members voted Thursday to allow federal grant
dollars and funding from the Jackson Redevelopment Authority to pay for the
Greyhound improvements.

Union Station is undergoing a $19 million facelift to convert the depot into
a multi-modal transportation center, could open as soon as next December,
said Calvin Hudson, manager of the city's building and grounds division.

The depot is expected to house a JATRAN transfer station, Greyhound Bus
Lines, taxi services, casino buses, an airport limo service and a
restaurant, Hudson said.

"I think the Union Station project is perhaps going to be one of the anchor
projects, if not the anchor project, for downtown Jackson," said Councilmen
Leslie B. McLemore.

Exterior improvements to the 60,000-square-foot facility, such as the
outdoor canopy, could be finished early next year.

Crews still need to do wiring and internal improvements that won't be
finished until next winter, Hudson said.
