Group to shape historic district

HOLYOKE   =97   A group has been named to establish a historic district i=
n the
area encompassing the city's first train depot in Ward 1 and other nearby
buildings where North Canal and Main streets join.

Mayor Michael J. Sullivan appointed a seven member committee to serve on =
the
committee including Carl Pinette Jr., executive director of Save Historic
Holyoke Inc. That organization owns a building at the former Hotel Jess a=
t
335 Dwight St. (at Main) which might be included in the district. The Jes=
s
was a railroad hotel built in 1874. Members are scheduled to meet togethe=
r
for the historic district at 7 tonight in Sullivan's office in City Hall.

Others appointed are J. Ann Sinclair, planner from the Office of Communit=
y
Development; Jeffrey F. Burkott, senior planner with the Planning Board;
Peter Papineau, an architect and member of the Holyoke Historic Commissio=
n;
Charles Davignon, of Davignon Real Estate; Celia Appel of Riverwood Avenu=
e
and Kent Lefebvre, Signs Plus, Inc., 62 Main St.

The appointments run to Jan. 1, 2002.

The city has a North High Street Historic District created with the help =
of
developer O'Connel1's Engineer & Financial Inc. which developed the
Steiger's Building.

It has been less successful developing residential type historic district=
s
so far failing along Fairfield Terrace, a true boulevard with a green in =
the
middle and also in the Wyckoff Park area of the city.

Among the buildings in the area are many with similar architecture like t=
he
Mount Tom Fire Station which was decommissioned in 1976, the present Holy=
oke
Water Power Co. office and several commercial-warehouse type businesses
along Main Street.
