WB TOWER FACE LIFT GIVES HOPE OF LONGER SURVIVAL...
As many of the towers on the former Baltimore & Ohio along CSX
Transportation's Metropolitan, Cumberland, and Keystone Subdivisions are
slated to or have already fallen, a facelift to one has given operators a
glimmer of hope. WB Tower, located in Brunswick, Maryland, controls the
entrance to the MARC passenger train storage yard and what remains of the
sprawling B&O freight yards, and is one of the last active towers on the
original B&O lines.
While plans have been formulated to demolish or remove many of the other
towers, including this fall's closure of NA Tower in Martinsburg, West
Virginia and SA Tower in Sand Patch, Pennsylvania, crews worked to restore
WB Tower in Brunswick. The tower has received new siding and a new roof,
upgrading the overall appearance of the former wood-faced structure.
According to CSXT personnel, the tower should remain in service into 2002,
with no firm closure date set for it.
