Westcliffe Enginehouse

Local preservationists have recently completed restoration of the former Rio
Grande single-stall enginehouse at Westcliffe, Colorado, which is to be part
of a small museum complex. The wooden structure was taken apart
board-by-board and reassembled, with new wood replacing rotted timbers and
siding where necessary. A depot-like structure has also been built nearby as
an interpretive center, and a railcar display is planned.

Westcliffe was located at the end of a branch from Texas Creek (between
Salida and Canon City). Badly damaged by floods in 1885, the town did not
get rail service back until 1901, when the narrow gauge track was replaced
with a standard gauge line. The line was abandoned in 1937 and removed the
following year.
