Tired of Crowds and Bores? Go by Train

To the Editor:

Reading "Air Travel's Next Generation," by James Fallows (Op-Ed, June 11),
about the airline traffic crisis, I found it hard not to think of the
high-speed train that runs from Boston to Washington.

To sit in a comfortable seat with real elbow room as the countryside goes
by, to stretch out and put one's feet up, is truly nice. And if the
passenger next to you is a bore? Move. Take a walk to the lounge and have a
drink, coffee or food. And arrive in New York or Washington close to hotels
and subways.

Getting to a train station is far easier than driving on jammed highways to
arrive at a crowded airport. Why not add high-speed train connections to
major cities and reduce the pressure on air traffic? Trains are less
intrusive than jets and airports, and are cheaper to build.

Leaving the train solution out of the national transportation discussion
deprives us of a very comfortable solution.
