The answer to that question is an easy one. In the 1950s, passenger
traffic was dropping off rapidly. The New Haven was teetering on
the edge of bankruptcy again, and abandoning service wherever they
could. Providence to Worcester service was dropped in the mid 50s,
and passenger traffic on the Shoreline was greatly reduced. There
simply wasn't enough traffic to justify the expense of operating such a
large station only 4 miles from the much larger station in Downtown
Providence
