Streetcar museum could find home in old building
There are precious few relics of San Francisco's electric streetcar history,
and hardly any tourist attractions in the remote neighborhood of Ingleside.
So many neighborhood preservationists hope to restore the Geneva Office
Building and Power House and convert it into a streetcar museum and public
meeting place at Geneva and San Jose Avenues.
They have managed to attract more than a half million dollars in funding,
but their ultimate goal will take millions of dollars more and several years
to complete, they say.
The building that survived the Great Earthquake in 1906 was boarded up after
the Loma Prieta quake in 1989. Now, after three years of toil to get the
city to fix the 22,000-square-foot building, preservationists are getting
what they want.
Community leaders and residents gathered around a huge white heavily frosted
birthday cake on Friday to fete the 100th anniversary of the Victorian
edifice, which was once the center of streetcar life in San Francisco.-San
Francisco Examiner, Mark Granados
