(rshsdepot) Brooklyn to Jersey City ferries . . .

rshsdepot
As an addendum here is a list of the ferries from Brooklyn to Jersey =
City (none would have been very convenient from LIRR, the date on the =
Atlantic Avenue makes use of a bus or taxi between Flatbush Avenue and =
Atlantic Ave waterside):

Brooklyn Annex Ferry (1870-1910) run by the Pennsylvania RR from Fulton =
Street to Exchange Place

Annex Ferry (1883 to ca. 1900) run by Pennsylvania RR from Fulton Street =
to the Erie Depot Jersey City...we may have discussed this one last =
year.

Atlantic Annex Ferry (1929-1935) run by the Pennsylvania RR from =
Atlantic Ave to Exchange Place. Did we discuss this one? What was this =
for? This was the original terminus of the LIRR in Brooklyn until the =
tunnel was sealed soon after steam was banned 1861 (I don't remember =
much on the LIRR ferry from Atlantic Ave to Manhattan in =
Seifried...)...maybe this PRR ferry was some sort of LIRR connection to =
NJ??

The Royal Blue Line Ferry was run by the CNJ from Whitehall Street to =
Communipaw 1897-1905

Staten Island Ferry run by Staten Island Rapid Transit 1816-1905 (though =
it seems to have existed before the rail and must have had a different =
corporate owner name), Whitehall Street to St. George, city of NY since, =
there was also a Stapleton Ferry from Whitehall to Stapleton which is =
not really too far from St. George, 1909-1913

The Brooklyn and Richmond Ferry (Richmonds from coast to coast!) [69th =
Street Ferry] 69th St to St George (Brooklyn & Richmond Ferry 1912-39, =
Electric Ferries 1939-54, city of NY 1954-64)

New York Bay Ferry (1924-26) 39th St. (this is also I think the South =
Brooklyn RR terminus) to St George

I have no good info on the various ferries that some of the Coney Island =
ferries used, one of which was also at 39th..

By the way before the Williamsburg Bridge, Broadway Junction (would that =
be the stop called East New York on the El from Chambers?) was known as =
Manhattan Junction, you could get the big suburban cars to Jamaica =
there, the Brooklyn Streetcars terminated there (This stop is called =
Eastern Parkway now)...it is still important, three or 4 subway lines =
(it is also only a couple of blocks north of LIRR East NY station..I had =
forgotten how the El skirted by that area) Today you could take the =
Broadway El, the J train, from Chambers and Essex (Delancey) to the =
"Broadway-Eastern Parkway" Station, transfer to the IND "Broadway-East =
New York" station...the IND inherited this portion of the Fulton El =
route ,and take the A train to Rockaway Park or Far Rockaway. Voila! No =
flying junction, but you do get to ride on the ex-LIRR south of Rockaway =
Boulevard...The Broadway Junction is a neat el complex, the Canarsie =
line is also through there..as a Canarsie kid I remember the seemingly =
endless escalators there....Also neat is the Atlantic AVenue double =
platform station for the Canarsie line above LIRR East NY station-this =
used to be a transfer point for the Fulton El (I mistakenly implied that =
this portion was now IND...that does happen but east of here a ways....

The Best to you each morning,
Paul
