: Saturday CNE Tour

Our CNE Railway historical tour on Saturday 14 April lucked out with good weather. The rains held off until Sunday.

The tour started at a park and ride lot in Beacon with coffee and muffins. The 91 passengers on two buses left at 9:00 AM.

First on the itinerary was Fishkill Landing which is now the Metro North Beacon station. Our narrators told the story of the train car ferries that hauled freight across the Hudson River before the big bridge was built in Poughkeepsie. The rail yard and ferries are long gone and the land is being developed into a hotel and conference center.

Next was Wicopee Junction and Matteawan which was the headquarters of the ND&C RR and later became part of the CNE Rwy. From there we toured through Glenham, Fishkill and Brinckerhoff to Hopewell Junction. At Hopewell the riders had a chance to stretch their legs and look over the restoration work on the Hopewell Junction Depot. (more muffins and coffee)

Traveling north on route 82 we looked at Arthursburg and the LaGrange station which is now a private home. Next was Billings, Moores Mills, Verbank and Oak Summit. In Millbrook we saw the first RR headquarters building that is now a bank. We stopped to look over the stone abutments of the Bangall trestle.

Lunch was at Lia's restaurant in Pine Plains. The attached photo is the group about to get back on the buses after lunch. The photo is by Mark Kolodny who is a regular photographer on our CNE tours. Those of you who were on the tour will remember him as the guy with the camera and an orange hat. We recruited one of the bus drivers to take the shot so Mark could be in the picture. He is kneeling in the center.

On the return trip we stopped at Stissing Junction, McIntyre and the Agway in Millbrook. One remaining RR building is now part of the Agway storage yard.

From the comments I heard it seems that our railfans had a good time. I know I did. I think I can speak for the other organizers, Lee Beaujon, Jack Swanberg and of course the muffin hauling scouts Joe Mato and his wife Rose, when I say that running these tours is a lot of work but it is also a lot of fun.

Hope to see you on the tour next year.
