WINDER - As freight trains pass through downtown Winder, a depot building
stands as a reminder of a time long ago when passenger trains connected
Barrow County with big cities.
These days, the building serves as a depot for newcomers to Barrow and
houses the county's chamber of commerce and historical society.
To make those newcomers feel welcome in one of Barrow's historical
buildings, the chamber of commerce is planning to spruce up the depot inside
and out.
"We have already done some rearranging to make it more appealing," said
Melissa Jones, membership services coordinator for the chamber. "We'd like
to strip down the floors to their original hardwood or get new carpet. We
need new paint, furniture. We just want to make it more pleasing to the
eye."
Even though there is no cornerstone on the old wooden building to indicate
when it was constructed, Jones said it is believed the building went up
around 1890 when the first passenger railroad was built through Winder. It
could have been built as late as the 1920s when Barrow County Courthouse was
built.
The depot became headquarters for the historical society and chamber of
commerce in 1942.
Jones said the chamber is looking for both professionals and volunteers to
complete the renovations, but volunteer work will make the donations for the
project go farther.
It's been about 10 years since work was done on the depot, said Chamber
President Carolyn Wright.
"It's kind of been overlooked for the past few years," Wright said. "We want
to put it back to its original shape. We really want it to be a place for
citizens and visitors to come and feel welcome and get information."
On the outside, the depot is suffering from rotting wood and some broken
windows. On the inside, the depot needs period furniture and new paint.
Some volunteers have already offered their time to do some of the work
involved in making the depot a nicer place. Others have donated money
instead.
"It is a landmark for Barrow County and it needs to look like one," Jones
said.
