Article text:
Middletown – A plume of smoke rose hundreds of feet in the air this morning as firefighters fought to save a Middletown landmark.
A fire broke out shortly after 8:15 a.m. today at the historic O&W railroad station off Wickham Avenue. The flames were visible from as far away as Horton Hospital, according to bystanders.
Middletown firefighters were aided by fire departments from surrounding communities, including Goshen, Slate Hill, Howells, Mechanicstown and Pocatello, among others, as they struggled to get the fire under control.
The firefighters contained the fire to the back quarter of the building, saving the historic facade. The back was gutted.
Wickham Avenue was still closed as of 10 a.m.
