(LVRR) Save Packerton Yards

This bounced from a mon-member, but is worthy of reading.

The photos look a lot like when I last saw the place about 15 years ago!

re: Packerton Railroad Repair Shop, Carbon County, Pennsylvania
  Dear Friends:

Allow me to introduce myself my name is Thomas A. Zimmerman IV, I am heavily involved with community service throughout my area. I am president of our local Lions Club, serve on the board of directors of the Carbon County Fair & Lehighton Library. I also volunteer my time at our local hospital.
I am writing to you today in hopes of receiving your support in saving the Packerton Shop building and site located here in Carbon County, PA. The Packerton Shop building is the largest remaining structure left of the former Lehigh Valley Railroad founded by industrialist Asa Packer of Jim Thorpe, PA. Our county commissioner’s on a 2-1 vote, voted to demolish this site. They want to turn it into and industrial site. We have contacted the Pennsylvania Historical & Museum Commission about having this site placed on the Historical Registry. They than contacted the commissioner’s of Carbon County, PA and the commissioner’s sent them a packet of information. The historical society responded that since the building has lost its historical integrity it may be demolished. They have never even toured the site but based this opinion on a packet of information sent by the commissioner’s who want it demolished to make way for an industrial park.
The people who would like to restore it are willing to use "private" funds to do so. We would also like to put a former railroad employee memorial at the site as well. With that said I can not understand why the commissioner’s would want to demolish one of our last remaining landmarks of the Lehigh Valley Railroad. I am hoping you will be willing to help us save this site from its ill fate of being demolished. I would be more than happy to meet with you in the near future to tour the site and see the rich historical value it can still hold if people put there hearts in to it. Time is of the essence so I would appreciate hearing from you in the near future I will enclose all documents I have on the Packerton site for your review as well as photos. Please email me if you are willing to help us in this endeavor. May you and yours have a blessed holiday season.
  Sincerely yours,
