RE: (LVRR) Locomotive switch at NK Tower
Hi Bob,
Glad to meet you!
I grew up in Hillside separated from the LV mainline by the houses across
the street. There was a nearby street crossing shack with an old railroad
guy missing part of his leg who operated the gates when I was really
young. I have a still vivid young kid's memory of a train with red cars
stopped for a signal ahead and blocking the crossing (while I froze LOL) on
a really cold winter's evening. Probably, I guess, the westbound John Wilkes.
In later years I was involved in private railroad passenger cars and moved
them to and from the Rahway Valley RR in Kenilworth to NY Penn Station via
the old LVRR mainline, Oak Island and Hudson Tower. One of the normal
layovers (usually overnight - great fun in the late 1970s) was at NK on
the quite creaky spurs along the eastbound and westbound mainline tracks.
Would those tracks have been used by waiting LVRR engines? Even then, as I
waited fro the drill to move me again, kicking around ballast and dirt that
had been shifted around at times there were a fair amount of cinders mixed
in. From the steam loco era?
I have a trains website at www.inforworks.com/trains.htm that will have
LVRR stuff added when I can find my collection of B&W photos after the
last move.
Regards,
Richard
