Re: (LVRR) Sand?



Actually, the sand came out of the hoppers for use in locomotives - most
yards with engine facilities have some kind of means to resupply locomotive
sand.  In this case, the two large tanks simply held a supply on site.
Newer facilities use much smaller tanks and rely on the inbound cars to
store much of the sand.  The cars themselves tend to be older cars in
company service, probably too old or incorrectly equipped for interchange or
revenue service.  I believe the elevated tanks help serve to keep the sand
dry, also.

Given the number of untouched PC and Reading cars I've seen in sand service,
an untouched LV sand car would not surprise me. Has anyone seen an example?
