Re: (LVRR) Looking for C628 Pictures

LV's C628's came in two orders, the first built for the railroad, the second
all of the former Monon units, which had been traded in to Alco on C420's
because they were both too big and too troublesome for the Monon. This
second group got some reconditioning by Alco before being resold at a
bargain price.

They all arrived in the "snowbird" scheme. All of the units lasted through
Conrail, and all but two were repainted red. 630 got a tuscan scheme with
no nose diamond, and later got a 3rd coat of paint standardizing it.

Monon units had a nose warning light, and could be idenfitied on the LV by
this as well as the higher numbers.

These units came to the LV in 1965-67, so the wreck in question could only
have occurred between this time and the end of the LV in 1976. A couple of
them were wrecked at Laurel Run PA with the CNJ/LV track consolidation - an
LV train and a CNJ train with two brand new L&HR C420's hit head on, causing
considerable damage to all the units. All of the newer power, the
Centuries, were repaired; the CNJ units were RS2/3's and RSD4's and were
likely scrapped.
