Re: (LVRR) Looking for C628 Pictures
Alan,
This info basically comes from "Extra 2200 South", Issue #77 (December
1982). However, some comes from an old "Diesel Era" issue featuring the LV
628s, which I've read several times, but it's not on my railroad bookshelf
where it's suppose to be at the moment (what else is new?), so some is from
memory.
The LV roster of Alco 628s totaled 17 units (#s 625 to 641), the largest
group of second generation units on the road.
LV # 625 to 632 were purchased by the LV new, and came in the "snowbird"
white paint job. The built date for 625 to 631 is 11/65. 632 was built 1/67
as a wreck replacement (but the unit it replaced isn't noted in Extra, and I
don't think it was a 628 as all the 628s have a scrapped date).
LV # 633 to 641 were originally Monon #400-408, built date of 2/64 & 3/64.
Monon traded them back to Alco for C420s (8/67) because the six axles were
chewing up the Monon's rails. (The LV eventually had the same problem). Alco
overhauled them, painted 'em "snowbird" and sold them to the LV 12/67.
#625-627 are listed as having been wrecked 12/65, returned to Alco and
re-built, and returned to the LV 3/66. No notations on a wreck of either 628
or 640.
Both "snow birds" and "white elephants" are noted as nicknames.
All 628s went to Con Rail. 640 is listed as the last to go to scrap, in Oct
1981.
Four units (626, 632, 634, 636) were still snowbirds at Con Rail. The other
units had been re-painted red white a single, wide yellow stripe.
Take care, if I find that Diesel Era I might add some things to the above.
Best Regards,
Rich
