Re: (LVRR) Looking for C628 Pictures
Dear Rich, Josh, and Group,
I have some information on LV C628 #640. But first, a few questions,
since I am not as familiar with the LV as I am with DL&W / Erie / EL:
1. First, if I recall correctly, the C628s were ex-Monon units, were
they not??
2. When did they arrive on the LV?
3. Were they ever repainted in one of the other various LV paint
schemes?
One of the reasons you may have trouble finding a photo of #640 is that
it and #628 were involved in a wreck at Spencer, Tioga Co., NY. There
are two photos of the wreck on page 59 of "Images of America: Tioga
County, New York." Here is the caption:
"This train wreck occurred in Spencer in 1952. [Obviously not correct
date; was it 1962?] Some children threw the switch, derailing the
train. These two photographs were commissioned by the FBI as they
conducted the investigation."
One photo is a head-on shot of #628 embedded in the earth up to its
running boards. The other photo is a broadside shot of #640, similarly
embedded. It appears #628 was the lead unit, #640 was trailing
backwards. Damage to the units does not appear particularly severe
otherwise, but given the heavy undercarriage damage and the fact that
these were secondhand units, they were probably stored dead or scrapped
shortly thereafter.
My cousin, who lives just a stone's throw from end-of-track of the LV
Auburn Branch in Goodrich Settlement / Owego, has been developing an
interest in the LV. He referred to the C628 "snowbirds" as "white
elephants!" I laughed, having never heard that term in LV fan circles
before... but I guess it is appropriate. What do y'all think?
Cheers,
