I can vouch for the fact that Andy Barbera really laid on the horn when passing through Madison as related in these articles. I believe he lived in Madison so part of it was saying hi to his wife, the other part the pure fun of making a lot of noise.

Andy's last west bound run was on the Lakes Cities - Number 5. I was at Denville with a sizeable group of fans when he came through that night. He leaned out from the door to give the biggest farewell wave possible. One or two were taking flash shots but I have never seen the results. If I knew the date of his last run, I could probably give some detail on the train.

Attached is a shot from 1976 when he was running in Vermont for the Bicentennial celebration.

Hi folks,

Here are a pair of articles about Andy Barbera and his involvement with running the Phoebe Snow, from the collection of Steve Hepler, posting with his permission.

Steve is wondering if anyone knows where that round Phoebe Snow drumhead ended up - Andy later moved up to Vermont and was part of the Steamtown operation up there, and he assumed the drumhead followed. Andy passed away in Vermont, but does anyone know what happened to that drumhead???

He doesn't THINK the round drumhead in the New York Society of Model Engineers collection is the same one, but can anyone confirm?

Thanks,

- Paul
