Another possibility for the routing from the DL&W to Morrisville may be the
PRR's Martins Creek branch which crossed the Delaware River to the Alpha
Cement plant. The branch had connections with both the DL&W's Bangor and
Portland and the L&NE in Martins Creek, PA. I have attached a photo of the
CT1000 page that shows the branch and the Bel Del from Phillipsburg up to
Manunka Chunk and the trackage rights on the DL&W.

The branch was still used as of last year. At one time coal and later oil
trains were run to service the power plant near Portland. Recently there
was another customer using the former Alpha cement facility.

Of course, I was able to find websites with the answer to my question only
AFTER I posted earlier this morning. Hurricane Dianne in 1955 wiped out
the PRR near Manunka Chunk (not to mention the DLW damage). It seems that
part of the PRR was never rebuilt, with abandonment of the ~2.5 mile section
from Manunka Chunk to Belvidere officially being filed for in 1956.

The Wikipedia DLW Old Road site also says this about the Bel-Del, if you
read it carefully, which I didn't do before - only looking at the "Decline"
section. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lackawanna_Old_Road

Wikipedia says the DLW Old Rd between Washington and Delaware NJ went out
in 1970 (later than I would have thought given the tunnels) - the end of the
thru route, and Conrail abandoned the PRR BelDel from Milford down to
Trenton in 1978. The Bel Del from Phillipsburg south to Milford is now the
Belvidere and Delaware River RR, although only the northern half of that is
open. Last time I looked, the BelDel from Phillipsburg up to Belvidere NJ
was still hanging on due to a chemical plant or something like that in
Belvidere, but I don't know the operator (Conrail? NS?).
Back to the topic at hand of possible Oswego NY to Morrisville PA routings.
From what Jerry C found, the Bel-Del from Belvidere up to the DLW junction
at Manunka Chunk must have still been in service in 1945. My question is,
when did that section go out of service? I have some feeling it went out
already well before C-day, and thus may not have been available in the
1950's and 60's for the pig iron routing. Jim S

I just checked the PRR's CT1000, which lists all their stations,
interchanges and sidings and was issued dated May 1, 1945. Manunka Chunk is
listed as an interchange between the DL&W and the Bel-Del. The interlocking
and block station is also listed. So the routing to the US Steel's Fairless
works would probably be from the DL&W down the Bel-Del to Trenton and across
the Delaware to the PRR's Morrisville yard.

I don't know when the freight interchange ended at Manunka Chunk, but the
Bel Del (PRR) and a small yard, turntable, freight office and freight house
of sorts in the 1910s.

Paul,
While PRR - DL&W interline passenger service once routedvia Manunka Chunk
using the Bel-Del and Old Road, respectively,I was not aware of any freight
traffic interchanged there. If so, Iwelcome others to chime in.

Bob,

I will certainly defer to you on routing. However, it’s my
understanding that unless the waybill indicated a specific routing, the
originating carrier and others down the line would route to give themselves
the longest line haul. Northumberland vs Belvidere Jct was pretty much a
wash in terms of distance over the DLW portion.
