Hej igen Anders, I climbed on top of EL 6603 today, and took a few photos that are attached. The roof does indeed have some sort of protective coating, perhaps a type of asphalt. It did cover the entire roof, and is currently varying shades of gray. I would guess that it started fairly dark, perhaps nearly black, and has faded to a rather light gray. I did not detect any galvanized steel under the coating (the unprotected areas have started to rust).
As far as I know, this was applied during its last painting, some 62 years ago. It was released from Susquehanna shop on December 12, 1960.
