I have a COLLETOR hatbadge and a Nickel Plate Products H-1Hudson I am looking to sell. The Hudson is brand new in the original box and has never been run that I am aware of. It's the Modernized Version with a can motor making conversion to DCC easier.
The hatbadge is in good condition with only a few scratches on it.
I'm asking $475.00 for the Hudson and $45.00 for the hatbadge plus shipping. I'm open to offers. Photos will be sent if requested. I have two Hudsons but don't really need a second one. Please email me at if interested.

20221009_202337.jpg (image/jpeg, 1948x1461 135960 bytes, BF: 20.93 ppb)

Hello,

I have made an N-scale model (Fusion360 + Resin print) of EL 6603 Milk Car,
an ex.Erie Milk Car.
All simply since I found a drawing and wanted to test making my own 3D
prints of EL cars in N-scale. And so far I have to say that it works well,
really well...

On the http://www.rr-fallenflags.org/ webpage I found what I think is the
original specification of these cars. And from that I can tell that they
were painted in Pullman Green by Erie and had Gold lettering, chassis and
bogies were black and so was the roof walk... But... The actual roof?

From the specification I can only see that they had some kind of base
paint, but there is no top coat in the spec (or I just missed it...).

Was the roof also black as the Roof Walk, or was it silver (metal) finish?
Pullman Green?

Anyone here know? Any help is greatly appreciated!

And did any more than the 6603 survive into EL?

I attached a picture of the first printed car I have made, ready for paint
(when I got it figured out...).

Thanks!
Anders in Sweden

Subject: (erielack) Drawing/Dimensions for Erie Horizontal Rib Hoppers?

Hello again,

With the so far perceived success of the Milk Car (in previous posting) I
have found that Erie had a number (2000 pcs...) of an Horizontal Rib Side
Hopper. The road no for one picture I found was 31895.

Anyone on this list who has a drawing or sketch? At least some of the major
dimensions?
From the pictures I found that the inside of the hopper was around 30 ft
but that's it for dimensions... All I have is the photos and a photo of a
drawing in a book...

Dimensions of a H0 model could work as well, I'm out to capture the overall
"feel" of the wagon, if some dimension is slightly off, I don't mind...

And to keep on topic... Did any of these hoppers make it into EL? Seems
they were built somewhere around 1910-20 so they might have been retired
well before 1960... Regardless, these hoppers will pop-out in a coal train
and I will use my modelers licence to use them in my EL trains... ;)

Regards,
Anders in Sweden

In all the photos where you can sort of make out the roof color, they appear to be Pullman Green with a black-painted roofwalk. This applies to the cars that were all Pullman Green. Don't forget - some of the cars did get two-tone green paint. I don't know the roof color on these, but I surmise it would likely be black on those.

> And did any more than the 6603 survive into EL?

Well, that's a two-part question I think! I have photos of the following cars with EL lettering (green paint): 6603, 6616, 6623, 6638.

And I do have a photo of Erie 6630 in TTG paint in 1964.

After their express service ended, a number of these cars entered MOW service. I have photos of the following:

418011
418021
418027
419011
419012 (this one was ex-EL 6616)
419013

All these cars were Pullman Green, except 419013, which was Two-Tone Green (TTG).

Hope this helps...

These look great! I can't believe this is N scale!

Here is a drawing from an article in the Erie Railfan Vol. 2, No. 1. The drawing is by Roger Rasor and it is meant for personal use (not commercial reproduction).

The accompanying article says there were two groups of these cars: 31000-32499 and 32500-33499. The first batch was built in 1913, and the second batch in 1916. The main difference between the two batches were a heavier top chord on the first batch and a slightly wider internal with on the second batch.

They were all gone by the EL, but a few of them were used at coal breakers as inter-plant cars. I believe one made it into the 1960s (no lettering, just a rusty car).

This line has gone through many names, many triggered by line changes... we had the original New York & Greenwood Lake, which later became part of the Erie, and that became the name of that "branch" of the Erie. The name stuck around until 1963 when the EI did its line revisions in northern NJ, when the NY&GL was connected to the former DL&W Boonton Branch/Boonton Line.

Did the DL&W ever use the term "Boonton Line", or was it always the "Boonton Branch?" Originally the line WAS a branch that came out of Denville and headed east to service the iron furnaces in Boonton. It wasn't until later when the line was extended all the way to West End when it became a real through route, but was still called the "Boonton Brnach." Does anyone know for sure when the term "Branch" was replaced with "Line" in the name? Did it pre-date EL? Or did it take place when they combined the DL&W line with the NY&GL?

Either way, the "Boonton Line" name lasted until the NJT line reconfiguration in Montclair in 2002 (do I remember that date correctly?)... something that EL was always discussing doing but could never get past obtaining the land between the Montclair Branch and NY&GL. The State of NJ seemed to have no problem getting eminent domain to make it happen.

And today the line has been rename yet again to the "Montclair-Boonton Line", reflecting yet another merger of former EL lines - the "Boonton Line" and the former DL&W Montclair Branch. So when you think about it, this line is made up of three former lines: DL&W Boonton Branch (Denville-Mountain View), NY&GL (Mountain View-Montclair) and DL&W Montclair Branch (Montclair-Roseville Ave.)

I have a December 13, 1942, public timetable showing "Boonton Line".
It's interesting what happened to the length of the line.
The DL&W was 2.4 miles shorter via Boonton than Morristown; the Morristown line mileposts have a 'D' as you go west of NJ 10.
The 1942 timetable shows a fare difference for Mount Tabor, Denville, Rockaway, and Wharton. No fare is shown for Dover via Morristown!
By 1955, Boonton and Mountain Lakes were added to the stations with two different fares - you could go to Denville and reverse directions. That continued in the 1962 timetable.
The 1970 timetable I have doesn't include the Boonton Line; it shows only Denville and Dover with fare differences. The mileage was reduced by a mile, probably to reflect the route change.
Judging by mileage markers on catenary support poles near Walnut St, the Montclair Connection is over a mile longer than the NY&GL. Employee timetables show Bay St at 12.8D and Walnut St at 12.1 miles. Googlemaps measures the distance between those stations as about 0.6 miles, so Walnut St would be at 13.4D, making the Montclair-Boonton line 1.3 miles longer, or 0.3 longer than the original DL&W route. No extra charge on the tickets...

Yes, the DL&W used the term "Boonton Line". See the attached page from the June 30, 1934 Suburban Timetable.

pictures of the F&C model that add some helpful details!

Also thanks for the data about the dates and numbers. I'm not that picky
when it comes to being exact, I model what I like and go for plausible...
For this project I need to stretch my limits a bit, but I have EL, DL&W and
Erie hoppers for my coal train (and 3x EL Trainmaster) but I think I can
squeeze this in and still be happy.
My modular group often runs "the 50s" but they don't mind occasional EL
tranis appearing so these will work fine... I think...

Thanks for all your help so far! Very grateful!

Anders in Sweden

Subject: Re: (erielack) EL 6603 (ex Erie) Milk Cars color question

Thanks again Paul!

As before, VERY helpful! And I got more than I asked for, some numbers of
the cars that made it into EL, excellent! :)
I had plans to build (print...) 4-6 cars, and now I have 6 actual EL
numbers, very good! I'm very happy! :)

The TTG scheme sounds interesting, I will do some research for that and
perhaps I'll manage to build 6616.
And I might paint some Erie units as well, just for fun.

Yes, the resin 3D print produces amazing details! There are some drawbacks,
you need to fiddle a bit with slicer settings and orientation to get good
prints.
When done, it turns out very good! I think I can do better with crisper
details in my prints, the bogies are a bit "soft" in appearance.
But for N-scale and "playing trains", they are excellent! Adding some more
effort and applying separate Grab Irons of brass/NS wire may improve
further.
I went for "good enough" and tried to mimic the detail appearance of
Micro-Trains and Atlas cars, it blends better with all my other cars...

Again, thanks!
