Subject: Coal in Boxcars
"Trestle-boxcars_with_coal_1901_LLMHS.jpg" - image/jpeg, 2000x1457 (24bit)

List,

Last Saturday a friend of mine showed me a photo of a wooden schooner he found in a background photo of the DL&W trestle at Buffalo. It wasn't the schooner I was interested in but the boxcars on the DL&W Buffalo Trestle. The photo is from 1901. Several boxcars are spotted and obviously coal is being shoveled out into the coal pockets. At this time the DL&W's coal cars were gondolas with four doors in the bottom, and coal had to be shoveled to these doors. This is the first photo I've seen of boxcars on the trestle. I had read that high grade coal was shipped in boxcars to eliminate pilfering. I've also seen stock cars with drop bottom doors for shipping coal. But boxcars seem to be extremely labor intensive. How common was this?
